Check engine light

Check engine light diagnosis

A warning light is a starting point, not a diagnosis. We find the real cause before anything gets replaced.

Common signs

When to bring it in

  • Check engine light is on or flashing
  • Rough idle, stalling or hesitation
  • Worse gas mileage than usual
  • Car feels weak when you accelerate
  • Failed an emissions test
What we do

We read the codes, then test the systems behind them, and road-test when needed.

You get a plain-language explanation of what’s wrong. Hooking it up to our diagnostic computer has a fee, and you approve it before we start.

Questions

Good to know

Is a flashing check engine light serious?

Yes. A flashing light usually means the engine is misfiring, which can damage the catalytic converter. Drive as little as possible and call us.

Can’t I just get the code read at a parts store?

A code points to a system, not a part. We test to find the actual cause, so you don’t pay for parts that don’t fix the problem.

Do you charge to diagnose it?

Looking it over is free. Finding the cause of a check engine light means hooking it up to our diagnostic computer, which has a fee, and you approve it before we start.
